STARSAND CITY
OVERVIEW
Living and working in Starsand are both simple endeavors for Fallen Stars. Truthfully, they don't need to have any sort of job in order to get by. Civilians look out for the Fallen Stars at no price, providing them with free housing, meal tickets, and the supplies that they need to survive. Even then, the Starling used as currency can be generated by offering thanks at a shrine or performing acts of kindness. But jobs are still available; As is the option to start a business.
CLAIMING HOUSING
Getting a house in Starsand City is very simple! In most cases, characters only need to pick their preferred area and ask a local. An appropriate house can usually be found or, at worst, made using spirit magic. All houses are maintained a House Spirit, who maintains the property. House spirits are not like typical contracted spirits; Their shrine is the house and they cannot leave the premises.
As long as they are on the property, a House Spirit can manifest physically and use basic elemental magic to defend their property. They charge faith and Starling like rent, but otherwise handle all house maintenance for free. A well loved and happy spirit may even help with the household chores... An unhappy spirit is more likely to prank the household and cause mischief.
When applying for housing, you will need to think of a name and physical form for the Housing Spirit. You will also need to pick out Level and District for the house to be on. This is to help you identify who your characters' neighbors might be and snag some easy CR!
STARTING A BUSINESS
Another opportunity for Fallen Stars is to start a business. Businesses work similarly to housing, in that they require a spirit on the premises. Business Spirits maintain the business' building, create basic supplies, and generally help out. They are always spirits who have sincere interest in the business. Fallen Stars who want a business will leave an application at a kami's shrine and then wait for that kami to find an interested spirit. Business Spirits are very passionate and can manifest physically while on the job. They may even be able to regain some senses; Business Spirits at a cafe can taste food and Business Spirits at a spa can feel heat or massages.
When a Fallen Star starts a business, it is powered by their faith. If they drop, then the business will begin to disappear. The Business Spirit would need to switch contract holders in order to maintain the business.

TOP LEVEL
The Top Level is the most common place to live or start a business. It is, after all, the busiest level of the city. There is a large shopping distract, many shrines, and plenty of housing. The general vibe of this level is city and suburban living, with apartments near the city center and free standing houses popping up as you get further from the shopping distracts.
Businesses
- The shopping district in the city center is a pretty large and popular place filled with all sorts of businesses. There is a lovely fountain in the center and some benches and trees along the streets to allow for people to sit in the shade. While the shops themselves vary in both size and purpose, a lot of them are smaller shops. In return for the small size, they are also incredibly popular!
Businesses on the first level are always found in 'premade' buildings. It is very rare for a building to pop up magically. While the most common place to put a business is in the city center, there are plenty of options in the areas outside as well.
Housing Districts
City Center
For those who want to live near the hustle and bustle of the shopping centers, the city center is a perfect choice. Only apartments are available here, ranging from studios to 2-bedrooms, but they are all modern and well kept. It's even possible to rent a space above your business.
East Suburb
If you want to be close to the action, but not right on top of it, there is the East Suburb. It's about a forty minute walk from the shopping districts and made up primarily of townhomes. You're likely to share a wall with someone, but that just makes getting to know your neighbors that much easier!
West Suburb
Furthest away from the city center is the West Suburbs. There is a trolley line connecting them to the rest of the city, but the ride still takes a little over a half hour. However, all of the homes here are free standing and much bigger than anything you would find in the city.
Shrine of Love Village
Located at the foot of the Shrine of Love, right before you climb the hill, is a small village. The shops and houses here all have Japanese architecture and lean towards a modest presentation. Though it's a forty minute trolley ride to the city center, this area has its own grocery stores and a few small cafes to entertain the residents.

LEVEL FOUR
The forth level is known for being a chaotic patchwork of realities, all fueled by spirit magic. It's made of a variety of platforms with drastically different atmospheres between them. The only consistent thing here is that this level is primarily made of spirits: There is enough Faith Magic in the air that spirits can even take on ghostly forms and make their own houses.
Businesses
- Due to the nature of this level, there aren't actually many businesses here. Spirits don't need to eat or drink and can't indulge in many physical luxuries, even if the magic here allows them to be seen more easily. Instead, businesses on the forth level tend to be service-orientated. It's possible to make huge buildings here that are completely soundproof, but whose outside space is as small as a tent. It's very easy to customize these spaces as well.
Housing
- Living on the forth level is quite possible and very easy to do! The houses on this level are very small on the outside, not much more than a door to walk through. However, when you go inside, the houses are actually much larger. These magical spaces are powered by faith magic. Exteriors tend to be wonky and fantastical, reflecting the hidden personalities of the person living within them.

LEVEL THREE
The Third Level is much quieter and spread out than the other levels. This is a nice and serene place that feels like it's just built for relaxation. The people on this level also hold a special reverence towards the spirits around them. It takes about 15 minutes by elevator to reach the top level and an equal amount of time to reach the bottom level.
Businesses
- Businesses are larger and more spaced out here. They tend to be visited by a fewer customers than those in the City Center, but most are loyal, and are prone to returning time and again. It's a great location for starting a farm or production-focused spaces, because you will have lots of natural space without bothering neighbors.
Housing
- Most of the houses are cozy cottages here with large lawns and huge spaces between properties. It's the perfect place to live a more relaxing and quiet life away from the chaos of the upper floors. There’s even space for a large garden or to keep larger animal friends! And with so much space between properties, you don't need to worry about nosy neighbors.

LEVEL TWO
- This is all farmland, and we’re not playing Stardew Valley.

LEVEL ONE
The foundation of Starsand City. This level is set in its old ways and the people here do all that they can to ignore spirits. Starling is rarely used; The people here continue trying to keep the old world currency in circulation. As such, living on Level One requires residents to have some sort of currency generating job on this level. They pay normal rent and don't have the same free luxuries that they would receive on the other levels. Fortunately, the elevator ride from top to bottom only takes thirty minutes and bottom floor residents can still go topside for free supplies.
Businesses
- Most of the shops that can open up here vary in size, but tend to be on the smaller side to conserve space. Unlike the higher levels, this level doesn’t rely on faith magic to give themselves more room.
Housing
- There are two types of housing on the Lowest Level: apartments and free standing houses. Both of these are older than those on the Top Level. The apartments are still well kept, even without the use of spirit magic, and can be studios to two bedroom apartments. The free standing houses are smaller and a little closer together than the top level, with short walls dividing the properties.

☆ HOUSING
Level 4, Platform C(astle)
Level: Four
District: Random Floating Platform C (if you wanna be neighbors, gofer it!)
Housing Spirit Name: Olrox
Housing Spirit Form: A somewhat oversized and spindly green lizard of indeterminate species. (About the size of a cat.)
Housing Information: The exterior looks* like a stone tower of European design, complete with arched windows and crenelations on top. The interior is... rather more like a modern home, with all the normal facilities and a small workshop space in what one might consider the 'garage' area in a normal home. It has two bedrooms and a full Japanese-style bath.
*Note that it only LOOKS like a tower. It's like... the diameter of a Super Mario warp pipe, and about twelve feet tall.
Level 5, City Centre

District: City Centre
Housing Spirit Name: Lyra
Housing Spirit Form: A small white cat.

The inside is large with a bedroom on the second floor, and an entire workshop (empty) for him to work in. There is also a kitchen and a livingroom. While the living room is pretty large, the kitchen is not so much considering he doesn't cook.
Top Level, East Suburb

Housing Spirit Name: Kotori
Housing Spirit Form: A nondescript green parrot
Housing Information: A simple, modern-looking two bedroom apartment. It's got a really nice kitchen! Rumor has it that Kotori refuses to allow the cooking of chicken in the apartment. This claim is dubious.

Level: 1
District: N/A
Housing Spirit Name: Hajime (read with the character for 'one'/ichi)
Housing Spirit Form: A small black and white striped housecat.
Housing Information: A modern, sleek western-styled two bedroom, one bath. There's plenty of space for a living room to invite a good amount of guests for a party or sleepover, as well as a decent kitchen. Colors in the house are all neutrals and there isn't much in the way of furniture, making the place feel a lot larger and emptier than it actually is.
Top Level, City Center
Level: Top Level
District: City Center
Housing Spirit Name: Sayuri
Housing Spirit Form: A small white rabbit with red eyes
Housing Information: It's just a basic one bedroom apartment!
Top Level, Shrine of Love Village

District: Shrine of Love village

Housing Spirit Form: A small rabbit. Most of its fur is a dark purple, but the fur on its belly, paws, and tail are a turkish rose. It also has heterochromatic eyes; one is turquoise, the other is pink.
Housing Information: A simple one story, two bedroom home. A nice enough kitchen and various living spaces, and both bedrooms are decently-sized. There's enough room for a small garden out front, but it's not furnished yet. Additionally, the house looks... damaged, on first arrival. Most of it is structurally sound and free of debris, but one of the bedrooms is a bit caved in and currently uninhabitable.

Housing Spirit Form: A crow, but instead of its usual black beady eyes, their eyes are a bright aquamarine blue.
Housing Information: It's a small, standard one story house of Japanese fare. Upon entering, there's a lengthy genkan and sliding doors that allow for storage that then leads into the combined living room/kitchen which is only separated by countertops. The living room is sparse; only containing a low Japanese table big enough for four people to eat and cushions to sit on as well as a television set. Down the hallway past the living room/kitchen combo is a small hallway the leads towards the bathroom and bedroom areas. When going through the hallway, people may open the sliding doors on the other side to reach the small backyard area and use the spot as a bit of a patio. Floors here are mostly made of wood.
The backyard area is, as of this current moment, rather bare and devoid of decoration.
The bathroom is a simple toilet and bathtub. The bedroom is pretty sparse, mostly consisting of storage space both around the room and under the tatami mats. Sleeping consists of utilizing a futon.

☆ BUSINESSES
Level 1, Business district
Business Purpose: On the surface level, it's a repair-slash-machine shop specializing in mechanical contraptions and odd bits of electronics. In reality, it's a front for creating tools for Fallen Stars, using completely mundane components.
Residents: Just Soma, for now
Level: One
District: Business
Business Spirit Name: N/A
Business Spirit Form: N/A
Business Information: The Hideaway operates out of what looks like it used to be a one-car auto repair shop, with the majority of the floorspace given over to machining tools and workstations. One corner is closed off to create a pseudo-cleanroom for dealing with fiddly electronics. What used to be the lift well is now a concealed space dedicated to more clandestine projects.
Level 4
Business Purpose: A place for the Fallen Stars (and anyone!) to train using their powers.
Residents: Velda Egan
Level: 4
District: Random large floating platform
Business Spirit Name: Ami
Business Spirit Form: A fluffy pink bird
Business Information: The gym is located on Level 4 and marked by pink gems in the outer walls shaped into a seven-pointed star. There are a few levels, but most of the rooms are regular padded training areas with magical reinforcement; some include things like punching bags and targets, others, obstacles to simulate terrain. If you still manage to wreck something, it'll regenerate or repair itself, so there's no worry about wrecking the place. That's what all the magic is for! There is also a small cafeteria, shower area, and hot tub area for after you're done training.
Most of the employees pre-reset were spirits who, while not officially contracted to Velda, would perform repair and reinforcement work or offer snacks after training sessions. They were paid well in Starling (which is probably why she still lives like she's poor, come to think of it) but would also take tips. Now that she's learned a valuable lesson about actually contracting spirits you're working with, Velda is doing most of the work and could use some help.
Level 5, City Center
Business Purpose: Combination cafe/detective agency!
Residents: Fauna, Atsushi Nakajima
Level: 5
District: City Center
Business Spirit Name: Shayou
Business Spirit Form: A miniature tiger
Business Information: A two-story building. The bottom floor is a cafe, Shayou, where people can have drinks and snacks and discuss their cases or otherwise just have a nice time. The second floor is the main detective agency, and also where Fauna and Atsushi live, with records and files for all the cases they've handled so far.
Top Level, City Center
Business Purpose: A community center for all Fallen Stars — it is a place where any otherworlders are allowed to hold offline meetings without worry, teach each other varying skills as well as relax and have a good time!
Residents: Himeko Inaba (owner and management)
Level: Top
District: City Center
Business Spirit Name: Sirius
Business Spirit Form: A small blue dog with floppy ears: think Blue from Blue's Clues.
Business Information:
Canis Major is an organization that is meant to help the Fallen Stars in any way possible as needed, and this building is the main headquarters and community center meant for such purposes.
Upon entering the main building, characters are greeted with the automated information desk tablet: this tablet provides access to a few things: a basic introductory guide to Starsand, a map of the entire city and building, and a way to contact the owner for any inquiries. The tablet will also have a separate contact list for characters to input their contact information for the public, if they so choose.
Beyond that are a set of elevators which can take characters down to any floor.
The basement has a community pool and jacuzzi that can be used for both recreational use and for learning how to swim. There are showers separated by gender. Towels and basic swimsuits are provided for use. The pool also has several diving boards at different heights.
As the basement is the most recreational place, there is also a gym where characters can play sports (equipment is included) as well as a computer lab.
The second floor is filled with rooms that can be used as classrooms for Fallen Stars to share their skills. There are also specific cooking rooms that come with a fully stocked kitchen with all the basics necessary to cook. All rooms come with a small tablet panel on the wall that can be used to order items for delivery, revisit any of the information found on the first floor, or contact anyone as needed.
The third floor consists of the meeting room, which is large enough to hold all the Fallen Stars in the city. There is a large meeting table and plenty of chairs for everyone to sit on as well as whiteboards, chalkboards, a projector and television. This room is highly protected and is meant to be a safe space for characters to talk about pertinent information without it getting leaked to the Facility or anyone else outside of these walls.
The top floor consists of office rooms for characters who want to help work at Canis Major. Most of the rooms are a lot smaller and are meant to be for smaller private meetings, but can also be used as a private workspace. Each character who decides to help out will get their own private office and key that can only be unlocked by them and the building owner; all office rooms will have nameplates with whatever name they give written on them as well as any additional pertinent information that they might want to add.
The building owner also has their office on the top floor at the end of the hall, for those who want a private discussion with them for any matters.
Top Level, City Center
Business Purpose: A place to sit and enjoy a meal! And chat with the operator.
Residents: Ryoko Asakura
Level: Top
District: City Center
Business Spirit Name: Chibi
Business Spirit Form: A little cartoony looking octopus!
Business Information: A small building with the operating booth outside of it. The building is basically used to store ingredients and anything else to assist, but most of the work is done at the stand itself.
i'm literally too lazy to describe it rn so think of somethin like this, only with star imagery because of course
Top Level, City Center
Business Purpose: Cafe! Secret meeting place for passing spirits & kami, as well as a haven for Fallen Stars.
Residents: Mikale Reed & Staff
Level: Top
District: City Center

Business Information: TL;DR
Level 4
Business Purpose: Theater
Residents: Rui Kamishiro
Level: 4
District: A floating platform
Business Spirit Name: Robbert
Business Spirit Form: A bipedal white rabbit in a colorful waistcoat
Business Information: The outside of the theater looks kind of like a colorful circus tent with a strangely normal set of wooden double doors. Above the doors is a wooden “Wondershow Theater” sign, lit up with lights going around it. It’s a lot bigger on the inside. The entrance is a large rectangular room with colorful panelling on the walls, and a desaturated purple carpet. There’s a concession stand and space for merchandise sales, although usually that spot is empty. The theater itself is large with both floor and balcony seating. There’s a large stage up front with an aquarium in front of it (filled with robotic fish) and red curtains. The stage is constantly being equipped and adjusted with new ideas made by Rui. Backstage is where props and costumes are kept, and for the most part that’s all there is two it. There are a few changing rooms, and a workshop in the very back that is used for prop creation and maintenance.
Top Level, City Center
Business Purpose: A small publishing company for Fallen Stars
Residents: Aimee Brennan (Owner)
Level: Top
District: City Center
Business Spirit Name: Chie
Business Spirit Form: A large golden butterfly
Business Information: A small publishing company for Fallen Stars, a cozy two-story building with high ceilings and warm lighting and plenty of desks and seats to write or discuss writing. On the second floor is Aimee's office, a small room filled with various papers and manuscripts. A monthly magazine is published with poems and short stories submitted by Fallen Stars. The business will reach out to other businesses regarding literary events. Although it is primarily for Fallen Stars, everyone is encouraged to participate. Once the company starts making more of a profit, hardcover versions of the anthologies will become available.
